En Plein Air (2015)
is a thoroughly modern ode to the Hudson River School of the mid-nineteenth
century. Like their Impressionist cousins across the Atlantic, these artists
believed in painting from nature, within nature. They were inspired by the
untouched beauty of upstate New York, and created magnificent landscapes that
combined realism with imaginative detail. More information about the movement can be found on this nifty page!

Here, Brush invokes the legacy of uniquely American creative
expression in his signature simplicity. He is known for deconstructing common
phrases with a brutal irony and then displaying this wordplay through a variety
of mediums. En Plein Air reminds us
of our artistic and cultural tradition while perhaps slyly emphasizing our
differences. After all, the installation is not
“in plain air” but very much indoors.

When viewing En Plein
Air, it is helpful to reflect on Brush’s choice of medium. Though not his
first foray into neon signage, he has also worked with street signs,
scoreboards, and even Polaroid snapshots. Why do you think he decided to use a
neon sign to communicate his message? What about the message changes when one
considers both the medium and the location? How does the sentiment, en plein air, relate to Peekskill
Project?

There’s no right or wrong answer here. Brush wants his work
to create a dialogue about modern life, to bring us closer in conversation with
each other as we’re prompted to ask the tough questions. What issues or ideas
does this work bring up for you? Let us know in the comments.

Just outside the 150 North Water Street gallery, you’ll find
Desert Applique (2013) by Léa
Donnan. It’s hard to imagine a greater contrast to Brush’s approach than amidst
a forest of uniquely hand-crocheted tents. And yet, despite the
obvious aesthetic differences between their work, Brush and Donnan both play
with physical location. While En Plein
Air is situated firmly in the geography and history of the Hudson Valley, Desert Applique conveys a sense of
rootlessness.

Desert Applique was
inspired by Donnan’s lived experiences as a modern-day nomad who’s made her
home throughout Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the United States—
all while maintaining Australian citizenship. Tents are meant to be temporary
dwellings and culturally represent an “in-between” existence. Donnan uses this
perception as a way to give solidarity to all those living in the “in-between,”
including migrants, migratory workers, refugees, and the homeless. It is
especially poignant to consider this piece in the context of the current refugee
crisis. We are asked to imagine the physical and emotional reality of life
without geographic stability.

How do you think Donnan characterizes these experiences? The
crocheted designs invoke traditional Australian aboriginal patterns, and are a
stunning artistic achievement. And yet, consider the delicacy of these tents,
the overt vulnerability. And after all, Desert
Applique is in itself nomadic. The collection has travelled across the
world without a permanent home base.

Set-up commences for Hermann Nitsch's "Leviticus" at HVCCA

It's been a while since our last post (three months is essentially three years in blog-time) but HVCCA has been busier than ever and we are delighted to bring our blog back to life! We've opened two new shows which are currently on view, including an exhibition by the sometimes-banned, highly acclaimed Hermann Nitsch, leader of the Actionists and perhaps one the most celebrated artists alive today. "Leviticus" is composed of 12 terragraph prints, sacred vestments and a massive biblical text. In conjunction, these pieces remind us of both the ritual nature of worship and the raw power of the Hebrew priest and his god. As if that wasn't enough to entice you: three of the largest pieces are sprayed in animal blood. "Leviticus" is as visceral as it comes, and we invite you to experience it firsthand.

For those of us swamped under back-to-school mania, the opening reception will be September 12th from five to seven pm, the perfect week-end revitalizer.

If you prefer your art with fewer entrails, the LOVE exhibition is still going strong! It features one of Robert Indiana's ubiquitous "Love" statues (that one. You know that one we're talking about), as well as stunning works by Charles LeDray, Jonathan Newman, Sam Jinks, Birgit Brenner and many more, in a variety of mediums. Each piece offers a unique perspective on the most celebrated of virtues.

A handful of tiles, waiting to be admired!

For a blast from the past, take a drive down Central Ave and, across from the Peekskill Police Department, try and spy our latest piece of community art. You may remember the Public Tile Project, which debuted way back in 2009. More than two thousand tiles were painted by Hudson Valley kids, all representing a piece of our shared culture, which were then placed around Peekskill. By now many of those kids are in high school or away at college, but, thanks to an overwhelming response, there were still a few dozens tiles leftover.

Over the past few days, mastermind of the project Jo-Ann Brody has transformed these stacks of tiles into two magnificent public murals and the results are wonderful. This permanent installation is a testament to the talent of the Hudson Valley's young artists, and the hard work of HVCCA's staff. We hope that these murals brighten your evening jogs and morning commutes, and invite you to stop and examine these pieces of Hudson Valley history. Post your favorite tiles on social media and remember to tag #HVCCA!
Last but certainly not least, the most highly anticipated HVCCA event is Peekskill Project 6. Those of you who have attended past Peekskill Projects have an idea of what to expect. This citywide public arts festival is happening from September 27th through the end of December and will include an immense variety of contemporary art installations by 60 artists, spread throughout the city of Peekskill.

As the opening draws closer, we invite you to check our website for regular updates. The HVCCA staff has been working hard to organize the dozens of installations going up over the next month, ensuring that this Peekskill Project will be our best yet. Sneak previews, captured by a crafty intern, will be posted sporadically over twitter, so be sure to follow us!

Working time for art into a busy schedule can be a challenge, especially when there's so much to see. If any of our programming has intrigued you, Museum Day Live! is fast approaching and is the perfect opportunity to explore everything HVCCA has to offer. This program, sponsored by the Smithsonian, guarantees free admission to HVCCA with a Museum Day Live! ticket on Saturday, September 26th. We will also be offering a free docent tour at 2 pm with an exclusive preview of Peekskill Project 6.

The HVCCA calendar is stuffed full of events to attend, art of all mediums to view and experiences to share, and we are thrilled to present these programs to our fabulous community. What are you most looking forward to over the upcoming weeks? Is it Hermann Nitsch's bloody musing on ritual, or Robert Indiana's iconic burst of positivity? Do you hope to stop and admire our murals on your way to work, or do you have 48 hours reserved to fully experience Peekskill Project 6? Let us know in the comment box, and don't hesitate to ask your most probing art-related (or Peekskill-related) questions.
For duo "Keegan and Nick", art is a family affair. Self-described "absurdists" with "active imaginations", this father son team pushes boundaries.

Keegan's kinetic sculpture "VIP room" and video "Kissing Remixed" are currently installed as part of our "Love" exhibit here at HVCCA, and have been a topic of conversation for many of our patrons.

Alongside his own work, Keegan also does collaborative projects with his father, Nick. The dynamic duo created kinetic and non-moving sculptures, instillations, video pieces and more; all abstract in their own right.

On Friday, May 15th, Keegan and Nick begin a new show, Bounce, at "Spaces Gallery". The show runs until July 10th, so be sure to check it out!

Barthelmes, following in his father's footsteps wasn't a question a familial

Exploring the sin of lust, the artists featured explore sex, sexuality, and eroticism in both their purest and most contrived forms. Featuring photography, sculpture, metal work, drawings and much more - this new exhibition allows us to view lust from varying angles and perspectives.

Interestingly, the exhibit coincides with the "Love" show up currently. The juxtaposition of these two never-endingly intertwined concepts to each other creates a really interesting atmosphere, and raises a lot of question. The exhibits force the audience to question love and lust, in their own lives and in the larger scheme of things. Are the two ideas related? Can one exist without the other? Are both purely romantic or sexual concepts? Where do we draw the line between pure pornography and pornographic art?

The "Lust" exhibit is rated 18+, and features very graphic content.

Join us on Sunday April 19th to discuss and view the new pieces, and enjoy wine, beer, and things to snack on. However, maybe keep the drinking to a minimum if nudity makes you queasy.

Michael Zelehoski's work challenges the viewer. It tricks the eyes, deceives the mind, and tests the barrier between 2-D and 3-D. Using found objects (including wood from decrepit houses and police barricades, and rusting metal bars), Zelehoski turns these 3-D materials into flat assemblages. With a meticulous hand, and a mastery of perspective, Zelehoski engineers his pieces to lay on the line between sculpture and painting- with a style thats almost collage-like.

A member of our "Artists Club", Zelehoski exhibited with us in the Power of Place exhibit in 2013, and in the main gallery (New Hudson River School) for Peekskill Project V of 2012.

On May 7th, Zelehoski opens "New Order" at the Mike Weiss Gallery.

Most recently, Zelehoski's piece "Open House" was chosen as a permanent instillation in Musée National d'Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou.

Shirin Neshat could be called a "political artist", to say the least.

Raised in pre-revolution Iran, Neshat grew up with a father who's desire to westernize and modernize coexisted with her grandparent's traditional upbringing. Much of her work reflects these deep roots, especially her struggle with her return to Iran later in her life, and its difference to the place of her memories. With common themes of femininity, martyrdom and equality, and how these have a place in Islam, Neshat uses her films, photographs, and other works to send a political message.

Exploring political movements such as the Islamic Revolution and the Green Movement (or Arab Spring), her work affects both those in the islamic community and its outsiders.

With a black and white portrait series, Neshat explores the many faces of Azerbaijan, proving it's immense ethnic and cultural diversity. She began shooting the series in November of last year, interviewing each participant about their own definition of home, as well as photographing them in studio. The work is a beautifully simplistic portrait of the country and it's people. The commissioned work is called "Home of My Eyes" and runs until June.

The exhibit explores Neshat's work in the context of history. Each hand-selected piece is accompanied by an outline of its historical significance, such as its intended political message or the current events at the time of its creation. The exhibit is also centered around Neshat herself, so it features the notes, sketches, and plans surrounding her work.

Neshat is also currently exhibited here at HVCCA, in our "Love" exhibit.
This question is often addressed by Angela Washko in both her life and work. By interveiwing people who are relatively uneducated about feminism, Washko proves a need to further educate and develop awareness. Through their claims against the "feminist agenda" many of her dissenters just further prove the need for feminist action. Her interviews, however, do not take place on a typical medium. Many of her "informal interviews" come from interactions with characters on the "World of Warcraft" online game - where she poses questions asking these player's views on feminism and the connotations that come with it.
Typical video game users aren't exactly famous for their social awareness and political correctness. With a screen to hide behind, virtual witches and warlocks often throw around curses and derogatory terms, aimed at not only automated enemies, but also fellow players. Sexism and an anti-feminism agenda are often popular with users - Angela Washko explores this mentality through her exploits and inquiries on the gaming site. Washko posts her findings on her blog and also presents them as instillations, using a combination of video and photographic work ("screen shots"). Her latest massive project has been tackling one of the internet's "most infamous misogynist". She was able to score a virtual interview with Roosh V. , creator and writer of "Return of The Kings" and the "Bang" book series - an infamously sexist and misogynistic series of writings. As Washko says; "google him." You can find a transcript of and highlights from the interview here. The two discussed feminism, love, sex, and romancde - with highly differing opinions. Washko hopes to further her exploration of Roosh V., by seeking out women who have slept with him and interviewing them as well.

Her explorations into the mentalities of anti-feminists have garnered much attention and praise, putting her name onto the map. Among other projects, Washko was featured in an online gallery about body image: here, as well as in Amour Fou at the Anvil Center. AND: She is one of the first artists EVER to sell a vine (a short video on a social media site).

All of her recent accomplishments and endeavors would not fit in one short post so please do yourself a favor and check her out!
Last weekend, on valentines day, we celebrated the opening of our new show; "Love: The First of Seven Virtues". Benjamin Lybrand special feature of the night was when the museum director, Livia Straus, took to the DJ booth to make a quick speech at the end of the night. Our wonderful DJ Benjamin Lybrand paused his homemade beats and mixes and gave the mic away for an impromptu announcement. Each artist present at the opening was called up to speak about their pieces; shedding new light onto their beloved works. Hearing the history and meaning of some of the featured works directly from the artists themselves was an awesome experience.

Straus also spoke about some of her personal favorite highlights, including Robert Indiana's "Love" sculpture, and Saul Raskin's "The Beggars Dance of the Dybbuk".

At "Live Arts Fest" last month

Last month's "Live Art Fest" was no easy feat. But with the help and partnership of some amazing artists, it was a massive success. One of the most integral parts of the event took form in glitter, colored pencils, glue soaked yarn, and pastels on faded brown paper. Tracing their body's outline onto paper, customizing detailed faces, and decorating with a beautiful mess of color, kids and parents alike loved taking part in the life size portrait creation. Yardena Youner, a master of mixed media herself, organized and led the popular craft.
Youner's personal work, however, tends to follow slightly darker themes. War, her childhood in Israel, and political conflict reoccur in her work, alongside themes of peace, resurrection and dreams. Photography (often deconstructed), instillation, and mixed media are her tools of expression. Personal and political are one of the same in her artwork and she says her plan/process and her execution tie into one another. A beautiful mesh.
A member of ArtsWestchester, Yardena will be featured in their upcoming "Crossing Borders" exhibit. Starting March 17th and running until May 2nd, the exhibition is being held at the "Peckham and Shenkmen Galleries in White Plains. The exhibition revolves around work from artists of nine separate nationalities, their pieces focused on a "desire to build a bright future" while "remaining rooted in the past and connected to family legacy".
Make sure to stop by the show to support not only this wonderful artist and human being, but also the other diverse and inspired artists involved. The exhibit showcases works from artists all across the globe; from local Hudson Valley sculptors to painters the world (or century) over.

Love is not concrete or straightforward, and the pieces featured aren't either. The artists included explore love through different mediums and concepts, and no two pieces are even slightly alike.
Robert Indiana's famous LOVE sculpture greets you as you walk in. On one wall lies a huge painting adorned with colorful cats and other characters. Realistic human sculptures with slight twists are a common occurrence, and nudity is present in many pieces. The show is really not to be missed.

So leave the cold outdoors for the warmth of love, and join us this Valentines Day for a special opening. Geoff Feder is a local Peekskill sculptor who will be involved with our "Live Arts Fest" this upcoming weekend.

When asked his opinions on Love and Lust (the themes of our upcoming show) Feder, of course, automatically thinks in terms of art and creation. Art is more so lust than it is love. Art should be made lustfully. Obsession and "love" over each piece doesn't allow for growth as an artist. There is more emotion, less devotion to it all.
But yet it is a devotion. A passionate, creative, and outspoken man, Feder's motto is that art and creation are compulsions. Not a want or a skill, a hobby or pastime, but things essential to his existence. He throws his entire self into his work, leaving with burn scars and a sense of fulfillment.

On Saturday, Feder will be displaying his lustful passion for his work, proving the importance of his passionate process.

However, her special skill is a bit different than most. Not only does Mikkelsen create stunning and intricate works, her method is quite remarkable. Using both hands equally in a feat of ambidexterity, Donna mirrors one side of her canvas (whether that canvas be fabric, paper, or glass window pane), merging two identical sides into one cohesive and symmetrical piece.

Recently, Donna was featured in a show at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY. Her motions were projected on screen while live musicians played along. This complete joint effort of performance art and visual art, of the auditory and the aesthetically pleasing, is really an amazing and new artistic venture.
Also called "Ambi Art", this concept of mirror-like creation is known to be therapeutic and helpful in improving skill. This recently discovered process improves hand eye coordination and the ability to draw in proportion- but it is easier said than done.

Ambidexterity, the ability to use both the left and the right side equally so, with no hand or side claiming dominance, is a trait found in less than 1% of the population. An even smaller number, however, is able to take full advantage of their quirk to the extent Donna Mikkelsen has.
I was lucky enough to solicit a response from Alex McQuilkin, artist of the "Joan of Arc" piece featured in the collection. Here are her replies;
AM: A major inspiration for me is the commercial imagery around me here in NY. Fashion, advertisements, films... All of my work is, directly or inderectly, motivated by these images - particularly images that sell the idea of what I am or could be as a woman back to me. Lately I'm also really inspired by the spaces we live in, particularly the textiles that we surround ourselves with and wear on our bodies- I'm really fascinated by thinking about how these affect us.

Bryan Zanisnik really IS his artwork. Often physically the piece or part of the piece himself, Zanisnik commits himself like no other. We were lucky enough to have Bryan featured in not only he Peeskill Project of 2004 and 2005, but also the Graduate Show. He also had works featured in recent auctions, a major component of museum income. Bryan Zanisnik recently (11/1) performed a site-specific installation at The Brooklyn Museum as part of the Crossing Brooklyn: Art from Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, and Beyond exhibit. But, if you missed his past work here and his most recent show, we're happy to say now is your chance! Bryan has a bunch of upcomings shows and exhibitions, some nearby, and some not so much; including The Ties That Bind: Artists and Archives at the Albany University Museum in February, and a solo exhibition at The Hague in the Netherlands. If you're in Albany or the Netherlands, don't miss out on these shows! Also, be sure to check out his website for videos and photographs of his amazing performance work.
Hearing of a school in Illinois that had collected 11,000,000 soda can tabs to represent lives lost in the Holocaust, Schrier was inspired. He put his creativity, resources, and dedicated volunteers to work and "Wings Of Witness" was the magnificent result. This massive traveling installation is composed of soda can tabs from every U.S. state and eight countries, and draws inspiration from the Pavel Friedmann poem, "The Butterfly" . Through the piece, and through the community participation involved, "Wings of Witness" not only remembers and honors the millions lost in The Holocaust, but also helps to spread a message of hope and community.
As it travels to new homes and audiences, the massive sculpture is taken down and put back together again in new settings. Students, community members, families, those looking for meditative solitude or education; large groups arrive to help install and learn about the 3-D sculpture in each place it goes. Slight variations follow it, new can tabs lost and found, new geographic obstacles; but all in all the message is there: one of love, hope and memory- for one of the largest tragedies of all time.
Schrier begins each self-run workshop with a short video piece that details the history of The Holocaust and its victims, and the history of his project. Workshop attendees then break off, after a quick lesson, to piece together the "feathers" (links of tabs) that make up the wings. To know that you are part of such an amazing work of art that carries such a powerful message is truly awe inspiring. See his site for more details and videos of workshops and installments.
